Abstract:
This book chapter contains an overview of the development of triticale, which is a manmade cereal. There are mainly two types of triticale: octaploid triticale and hexaploidy triticale. Both of them are amphidiploids with the former being a product of hexaploid wheat and rye combination and the later being a product of teraploid wheat and rye combination. Efforts are underway to produce more of these hybrids throughout the world due to disease resistance capacity of rye. Many geneticists and breeders are trying to take advantage of major rust-resistance genes present in rye and making breeding materials which can be used to develop useful products. This chapter covers the historical outline of the development of triticale and their shortcomings. It also discusses in brief, pros and cons of triticale and also sheds light on future aspects of development and commercial adaptation of triticale.
