Abstract:

3D printing also called as additive manufacturing is one of the recent trends that has gained immense spotlight in the scientific field for its flexibility and effective usage in various areas. The methodology of 3D printing is extensively used in engineering and is an emerging technique in the medical industry, with enunciation on the fabrication of drugs and medical devices. This review deals with the methods and application of the 3D printing technology in the pharmaceutical industry. Various 3D printing techniques such as Vat polymerization, Fused deposition modelling, Powder extrusion and many others have been explained. The drug named “Spritam” is the only antiepileptic drug that is available in the market which has been completely fabricated using the technique of 3D printing. 3D Printed approaches for various diseases and ailments such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and tuberculosis have been discussed along with a brief view on the newer branch of 3D printing known as “Bio-Printing” which deals with the fabrication of biomedical structures using living cells, biomaterials and polymers. The advantages and disadvantages have also been commented on.
