Dr. Pawan Kumar Kanaujia holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from University of Delhi. Post-doctoral fellowship awarded ICMR RA-Ship (Research Associate) under project in the Department of Microbiology at University of Delhi South Campus, and I also worked as Assistant Professor in the colleges of the University of Delhi. During my research career, I gained an expertise of maintaining a large collection of strains of Yersinia enterocolitica isolated from clinical and environmental sources and extensively used tools of molecular biology, proteomics and bioinformatics. In brief, the study was undertaken in view of fact that pathogenicity of Y. enterocolitica biovar 1A is not well-established as contradictory claims have been made in this regard. These strains have been known to lack the classical virulence plasmid (pYV) associated genes. Iron is an essential micronutrient which is not freely available to the bacterial pathogen in the host. Thus, efficient iron acquisition, storage and homeostasis serve as an important virulence attribute. During this work, PCR-based detection and sequencing-based analysis was carried out for a wide variety of genes involved in iron acquisition and storage. Further, whole cell proteomic analysis was performed by 2D-GE and MALDI- TOF/MS to identify the differential abundance of proteins in response to iron-rich and iron-poor conditions. The differential abundance of proteins was revalidated using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Based on in silico analysis, the study also revealed possible two pathways of electron transfer for release of reserve iron. This indicated that existence of well-regulated mechanisms of iron-homeostasis might have a role in the pathogenicity of the biovar 1A strains of Y. enterocolitica. I have sound knowledge and practical expertise in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Proteomics and Bioinformatics. My research work is published in peer reviewed international journals, and has garnered more than 1100 citations so far (https://scholar.google.co.in/citations user=rWdmgu4AAAAJ&hl=en). The research findings have also been presented at reputed national and international conferences. I have also a member of international scientific community like American Society for Microbiology and European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases along with being a life member of the Association of Microbiologists of India
