------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dr. Absar Alam is a scientist of Fisheries Resource Management at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Prayagraj. He has been working with the institute since 2010. His areas of research interests are fish diversity, fish taxonomy, ecology of rivers, wetlands and reservoirs, conservation and restoration of inland fisheries and solving practical problems of fish production with an aim to enhance the productivity of open water bodies. His father’s name is Late Mohammed Nayeem and his mother’s name is Mrs. Shamima Khatoon. His is born on 9th March 1981 in small village of Bhagalpur district of Bihar in family of farmers. His city of birth is famous for silk weaving and its mangoes. He obtained his Bachelor degree in the Fisheries Science (B.F. Sc.) from the College of Fisheries, Kerala Agricultural University (KAU). He pursued his Masterdegree (M. F. Sc.) from the premier National Fisheries University in India, the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE), Mumbai. He has a Ph. D. degree in Aquaculture from ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE), Mumbai. In the year 2004, he received a Gold Medal (Dr. K. V. Devaraja Award) for the Best Fisheries Graduate form Professional Fisheries Graduate Forum (PFGF), Mumbai. He was the recipient of the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), a scheme of Indian Council of Agriculture Research. He developed bacterial biosensors that were capable to detect bioavailable inorganic and organo-mercurial compounds at nanomole concentrations in aquatic environments in his Master’s thesis. His Ph. D. thesis research work was on an invasive fish entitled “Studies on the life history traits of Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) of the river Yamuna at Allahabad”. He is a life member of the Inland Fisheries Society of India (IFSI), Kolkata. His scientific career began at Regional centre of ICAR-CIFRI, Prayagraj. He got opportunities to work on the some of the challenging areas confronting the inland open waters viz. Invasion, Environmental Flow (a case study on river Sone), river linking (Ken and Betwa rivers), fish productivity enhancement in wetland and reservoirs, biology of freshwater fishes (Oreochromis niloticus, Rita rita, Mastacembelus armatus, Minimugil cascassia), habitat alteration especially the impact of dams on fish fauna, restoring Indian Major Carps in the Ganga River and ecological investigation in reservoirs, wetlands and rivers. He has recorded the fish fauna of the entire stretch of the river Ganga, Yamuna, Betwa, Ken and Ramganga. I have published 22 research papers in national as well as international Journals, popular articles, two bulletins, 3 book chapters, and presented several papers in the national and international conferences. He has assessed the fish production potential and impact of stocking in some reservoirs and wetlands of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. He has uccessfully conducted the ranching of Mahaseer (Tor putitora and IMCs in the river Ganga. He has also imparted training to the fish farmers for improving their skill and livelihood. His future research endevaours will includemonitoring, improvement and restoration (ranching) of the riverine fisheries and biodiversity for sustaining the livelihood of the traditional fishers. Hisvisions are the up gradation of the existing culture technologies in wetlands and reservoirs of the desired fish species that are environmentally sustainable and cheap. He his enthusiastic to empower the youth through knowledge and technology dissemination to the fish farmers for enhancing their income generation and life style. He would also like work towards the various way the invasive fish species could be eliminated from the wild that are a major threat to the genetic health of the rivers.
